Shortly after beginning training in their new flashover unit, the Suffolk County Fire Academy started receiving complaints from nearby businesses about smoke odours. Although no smoke was actually entering their buildings, people could still smell it. After various methods of smoke dissipation, such as water fog and PPV, failed to alleviate the complaints, the training program for all local fire departments was put on hold.
Flashover Systems delivered a new smoke scrubber based on a prototype tested with the FDNY. With the help of local contractors and Fire Academy staff, the scrubber was ready for operation within one and a half days after delivery. Following a successful series of tests, local health and safety committees and trade union representatives approved the resumption of the flashover training program.
In the words of Chief Tom Kost, "Thanks John, we are now back in the flashover training business."
